Omani Friendship Award Print E-mail
Over 300 Omani students are currently studying at various Victorian learning institutions around the state. Recognizing the need to support Omani students, the Omani Consul General, Mr Hamed Al-Hajri and the Consulate General staff were instrumental in establishing an Oman Students Society (OSS) headquartered in Victoria.

To promote Omani culture the Students Society organized the First Omani Exhibition at Federation Square in Melbourne on 19 April where visitors experienced Omani hospitality, as well as seeing first hand Omani costumes, jewellery, pottery and crafts, and experiencing Omani song and dance. The exhibition was attended by many visitors, including the Lord Mayor of Melbourne (see photograph, left).

In his address at the official opening of the exhibition AACCI National Chairman, Mr Syd Giller, announced the formation of a special AACCI award available to members of the Oman Students Society of Victoria.

To acknowledge the role the Society plays in supporting Omani students undertaking studies in Victoria and the Society’s activities in promoting Oman culture and awareness within the local community, the Mr Giller announced the offer in 2008 of an ‘AACCI Oman Friendship Award’ for contribution to the Society and the community in which its members live. The winner of the award is to be nominated by the OSS Committee, and endorsed by both the Consul-General of the Sultanate of Oman and AACCI (Victoria Chapter) management.

The recipient of the award will receive return airline tickets to our National Capital, Canberra, including 2 nights’ accommodation and AACCI assistance in establishing an activity program during their stay.

The award will be presented at the Oman Students graduation ceremony in late May.
