Queensland, a premier beach and rainforest destination, was the first of the Australian states to commit to major tourism development.
Its many holiday regions and attractions range from theme parks and surf beaches to the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest complex of coral reefs and islands, and the wilderness and adventure travel areas of North and Far North Queensland.
The Gold Coast in south-east Queensland, a mass-market beach and theme-park destination near Brisbane and hinterland wilderness area, is complemented by the cosmopolitan area of the Sunshine Coast, including Coolum and Noosa, one-and-a-half hours' drive north of Brisbane.
They are joined by The Great Barrier Reef and rainforest attractions of Cairns and Port Douglas in Far North Queensland, plus the Whitsunday Islands, Townsville and Mackay and an array of island attractions.
Brisbane - a modern, growing city, yet one that retains the atmosphere of a country town - sits on the banks of the meandering Brisbane River, close to the waters of Moreton Bay. About 1.4 million people live there.
